5 Ways to Work Towards a More Equitable Economy

According to PolicyLink, “As America undergoes a profound demographic shift amidst rising inequality and persistent racial inequities, equity is both a moral imperative and the path to economic prosperity.” While we all sit by and watch the economy crumble, stimulus packages come too little too late and our government scramble to protect the corporations they’re in bed with, it’s interesting to see how, one-by-one, the systemic power structures we have lived with all of our lives are failing. But this is by design — they weren’t set up for the success of all human beings, but for the success of the white cis men who created these systems.

We at VVITCH believe in an equitable economy.

At VVITCH Digital, we believe in an equitable economy — one that starts with equal pay for equal work and ends with equal opportunities, voice, representation and power. Not that we needed a pandemic to prove it to us, but the white supremacist patriarchy isn’t so great at ensuring security for anyone but themselves.

We don’t want to look back on this time and not learn from our mistakes, so here are 5 ways that we can start building an equitable economy right now to prevent another economic collapse in the future.

1. Vote.

Elect folx who want to change the oppressive economy we’ve known for far too long. Policies like universal healthcare and a universal basic income should not seem outrageous.

2. Speak with your money.

Support businesses who support you. When possible, buy from and hire womxn-owned businesses. If that’s not accessible to you right now, share their work, amplify them.

3. Confront bullshit.

Honestly, it’ll just make you feel better.

4. Give a voice to the voiceless.

If you work in a setting where you have the opportunity to ensure that marginalized folx are seen and heard — do that. If you notice that a co-worker who is part of a marginalized community is being overlooked, talked-over, under-appreciated — find out why and challenge the oppressor. Racism, homophobia, sexism and ableism are deep-rooted. One vote for Barack Obama didn’t change that in a person. Remind them of that.

5. Stay curious.

If we never questioned whether the systems in place served us, we never would have realized that they don’t.

Let’s burn this fucking patriarchy to the ground, VVITCHES.
